Pests and diseases
French beans can be affected by many pests and diseases but I have rarely encountered serious problems with any of them. In some years there can be unusually high populations of slugs, snails, bean seed flies or aphids. In some years none of these will be a problem. I have never seen a serious infestation of any disease. Maintaining good soil structure and drainage, building up organic matter and maintaining good fertility with compost, urine and trace elements, will provide favourable conditions for plants to resist infection. However, there is one pest that is probably the most common cause of crop failure â the bean seed fly â but the problem is easily avoided (see below).
